Hundreds of prisoners of conscience in Bahrain have launched a hunger strike since August 18, 2019, protesting against the inhumane treatment which violates the most basic international standards for the treatment of prisoners.

Amnesty International said that Jaw Central Prison administration canceled a medical appointed for detained leader Hasan Mushaima, who is sentenced to life imprisonment.

The hunger strike battle entered its sixth day, while the Jaw prison administration turns a blind eye to the prisoners' demands, exerts more pressure and threatens them that worse is to come.

Maria Khoury, Chairperson of National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), said that a delegation from the institution visited the prisoners on hunger strike in Jaw Prison, adding that some of their demands are "legitimate".

81 prisoners in building 13 have joined the hunger strike, along with 115 others in building 14, in solidarity with the 15 prisoners who started an open hunger strike on (Thursday, August 16, 2019), in protest against the strict security restriction, discrimination from the rest of the prisoners and the harsh conditions they have been suffering two years ago.

Activist Ebtisam Al-Sayegh said that prisoner Mohammed Abdullah Al-Singace was taken to the prison clinic after his health deteriorated as a result of the hunger strike he launched about 40 days ago.

Activists on social media and eyewitnesses said the imprisoned Shiite cleric Sheikh Ali Al-Mustarshed was admitted to Al-Salmaniya hospital, handcuffed and shackled at the ankles.

"I would have liked to be martyred in another way, but it happened in the end," said prisoner Ahmad Al-Malali, who was facing imminent execution within hours by security authorities in Bahrain over the death of officer Hisham Al-Hammadi, which is a case based on no evidence but confessions extracted under systematic torture, which is considered to be the master of evidence in the courts of Bahrain.

Three human rights organizations appealed the international community to interfere and save detainees Ali Al-Arab and Ahmad Al-Malali from execution.

Bahrain’s Minor Criminal Court adjourned the trial of 12 security service men, including two officers, accused of mistreating a number of inmates in Jaw Central Prison by beatings, after hearing the statements of the investigating officer until September 19, to enter final plea.

Member of Bahrain Human Rights Society activist Zainab Al Khamees said that the inmates in Jaw Central Prison were served spoiled meals.

"Elias’ situation is deteriorating from bad to worse and the prison’s administration is stalling his treatment," says Elias' mother in a weak voice holding back her tears.

Parents of prisoner of conscience, who is sentenced to life imprisonment, Yousuf Hassan Jassim, called for allowing their son to receive treatment, noting that prison officials are depriving him of medical treatment.

he National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), a governmental institution, said that it visited Jaw Central Prison to "monitor the human rights situations".

From among the 5,000 political prisoners in Bahrain, the King of Bahrain Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa has released none. Of the 5,000 political prisoners, only one has been sentenced to alternative punishment.

Concerning the food poisoning the inmates suffered from, a mother of one of the prisoners tells Bahrain Mirror: "My son told me that they were poisoned after the Suhoor meal. The situation became catastrophic when the policemen didn't open the prison cell doors."
