Bahrain Mirror: The court of cassation refused an urgent request to release the Bahraini opposition leader and Secretary-General of Al-Wefaq, Sheikh Ali Salman.
Lawyer Abdullah Al-Shamlawi, member of Sheikh Salman's defence team, said that the court of cassation "refused the defence's request to stop the execution of his prison sentence".
He added that the court set October 17 as a date to look into the appeals against the verdict issued by the court of appeal that sentenced Sheikh Salman to 9 years in prison.
Sheikh Ali Salman was arrested on December 28, 2014. A court of first instance sentenced him to 4 years in prison; however, the court of appeal toughened the verdict issued against him, sentencing him to 9 years in prison. This move prompted international reactions from Bahrain's key allies, United States, and other countries like the United Kingdom, Germany and France. For his part, the UN Secretary-General also condemned the harsh sentences issued against Sheikh Salman.
