Bahrain Mirror: The Fifth High Criminal Appeals Court upheld a 5-year jail verdict against 3 suspects accused of setting fire to tires at Sheikh Salman Street in Al-Sehla.

The Public Prosecution accused the suspects of setting fire to movables, on September 30, 2015, that would put people's lives and money to danger, taking part in an assembly of more than 5 persons, aiming at disrupting public peace and putting public transportation to danger.

The first-instance court sentenced the suspects in December 2016 to 5 years in jail. 3 of the suspects challenged the verdict, the court accepted the appeals in form, rejected it in substance and upheld the appealed verdict. The suspects then appealed the verdict through the cassation court which overturned it.

Since 2012, riot cases that go under the demonstrations and riot section of the penal code were adapted to apply to the terrorism law, if there were "terrorist" purposes behind them, such as attempted murder of a police officer, violating the provisions of law and endangering the lives of people and their properties, within the regime's framework of harshening penalties against protesters and activists.
