Bahrain Mirror: The Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society issued a statement on the World Human Rights Day, December 10, in which it stressed that the Bahrain Independent Commission of Inquiry (BICI) monitored 55 kinds of violations in 2011 only, but the Bahraini regime expanded the types and forms of violations following the issuance of the Bassiouni report.

It added that "Some of the violations were referred to in the Universal Periodic Review of Bahrain's human rights file, such as withdrawing nationalities, depriving the sons of detainees of obtaining identity cards, displacing some families, prohibiting demonstrations, travel bans, political isolation and a large and broad package of laws and procedures targeting individuals and groups at the administrative, legal, psychological, social and political levels."

"The regime targets the majority of the people of Bahrain by these violations, as hundreds of thousands of people are subjected to violations of different types, levels and manner of implementation," Al-Wefaq further stated.

It went on to say "Part of these measures is a punishment for activists, grievant and various institutions, at the levels of civil society and political organizations. Part of these violations is an attempt to create fear among citizens to intimidate and threaten them not to think about demanding their rights."

The society pointed out that all basic freedoms - including freedom of expression, religious freedom, freedom of assembly, freedom of demonstration, freedom of association, freedom of movement, freedom of thought and all other types of freedoms - are prohibited and those who think of acting according to these freedoms are punished severely.

Al-Wefaq stressed that what is happening in Bahrain places an important ethical obligation on the international community, especially on those who have interests and relations with the Bahraini regime, adding that remaining silent regarding human rights abuses in Bahrain is a humanitarian crime.
