Bahrain Mirror: Public Attorney and Head of Judicial Inspection, Osama Al-Awfi, died on Friday (May 13, 2022), local newspapers reported.
A number of prominent political detainees said that Al-Awfi is known for taking on political issues and covering up violations, particularly cases of detainees' torture.
However, the most famous cases he pleaded in the public prosecution were those in which opposition leader Sheikh Ali Salman was tried. Al-Awfi took over the two cases and demanded to issue the "maximum punishment" against Salman, in trials described as "Daeshi".
Activists say Al-Awfi played a role in the most important political cases from 2009 to 2015 before being promoted to head of judicial inspection in 2016. He was assigned to the National Safety Court (military court), in which thousands of citizens were tried, mainly the political figures, over their participation in the pro-democracy protests in 2011.
Al-Awfi graduated from Law Faculty, University of Cairo, in 1995 and worked in the Public Prosecution since 2003. Two years later, he became head of the Muharraq prosecution for five years, and then head of the Northern Province Prosecution.
Al-Awfi was appointed in the judicial inspection prosecution and then became its head in 2016.
