EU Calls on Bahrain to Halt Execution of Mohammad Ramadan and Hussein Mousa

Bahrain Mirror: The European Union confirmed in a statement by the European Union Spokesperson, Peter Stano, that the verdict issued by the Bahrain's High Criminal Court of Appeal confirming the death sentences for Mohammad Ramadan and Hussein Mousa was delivered despite reported concerns on the fairness of the trial.
The European Union called upon the Bahraini authorities to halt the execution of Mohammad Ramadan and Hussein Mousa and ensure that their re-trial will be in accordance with international law and standards.
The European Union said that it is unequivocally opposed to the use of capital punishment in all circumstances and called on the Kingdom of Bahrain to introduce a moratorium on executions as a first step towards abolition.
"The death penalty violates the inalienable right to life enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and is the ultimate cruel, inhuman and degrading punishment," the statement said. The EU stressed that the capital punishment fails to act as a deterrent to crime and that miscarriages of justice are irreversible.
