Court Upholds 3-Year Prison Term against Defendant in Political Case

Bahrain Mirror: The First High Criminal Court upheld a three-year prison sentence against a defendant who joined Bahraini Hezbollah.
The defendant lost his right to appeal after he did not appear at the trial sessions.
The court said it had implemented Decree No. 16 of 2019 abolishing the penalty of 'revocation of nationality', as the court of first instance had withdrawn the nationality of 92 defendants out of 138 defendants in the case.
The island kingdom's courts in recent years have worked towards revoking the citizenship of hundreds of dissidents after their trial under the "Terrorism Law", which allowed the revocation of the citizenship of those convicted after a constitutional amendment passed by the National Assembly (the Shura Council and the House of Representatives).
However, a recent decree issued by the King abolished the powers granted to the judiciary to revoke citizenship of those convicted in cases of "terrorism", which led to the restoration of citizenship to about a thousand citizens.
