Bahrain Mirror: A Bahrain court sentenced opposition leader Ebrahim Sharif to six months in jail and 500 BD fine to stop the execution of sentence after a Bahraini court convicted him of "insulting president of a foreign country".
Sharif called on, via his Twitter account, the Sudanese President to leave office in response to protestors.
Amnesty International condemned the verdict against Ebrahim Sharif and said that his "trial and sentencing is simply the latest development in the Bahraini authorities' sustained and systematic repression against their own citizens."
Amnesty International's Middle East Research Director Lynn Maalouf said: "It is flabbergasting that someone can be made to appear before a court and stand trial, let alone serve a sentence, for simply having expressed their opinion on Twitter."
She concluded "The silence of Bahrain's key allies, namely the USA and the UK, plays no small part in the unchecked pattern of repression. The international community must use its influence in sending a clear message to the Bahraini authorities that such practices cannot be tolerated."
