Ibrahim Bahr Candidacy Rejected over Affiliation to Opposition Wa'ad Society

2018-10-26 - 1:12 am

Bahrain Mirror: Artist Ibrahim Bahr said that the Northern Governorate Supervisory Committee rejected his nomination papers because he belonged to the opposition Wa'ad Society, which was dissolved by the authorities.

Bahr submitted his nomination papers for the sixth constituency in the southern governorate.

Bahr said on his Instagram account that he had forgotten that he has a membership in Wa'ad Society, since he had only joined it at the beginning of its formation only, wondering how that would have caused his nomination to be rejected.

Earlier in the year, a constitutional amendment was passed to ban members and leaders of dissolved political groups from running for parliamentary and municipal elections. Later, legislation was passed to ban them from membership in club councils as well.

Since 2011, the authorities have launched a harsh campaign against the opposition, culminating in the dissolution of their political societies (Amal, Al-Wefaq and Wa'ad).
