UN Calls for Retrial of 4 Bahrainis Whose Death Verdicts were Commuted to Life Sentences

Bahrain Mirror: UN human rights experts called for retrial of each of Mohammad Abdulhassan Al-Mutaghawi, Fadhel Sayed Radhi, Sayed Alawi Hussein and Mubarak Adel Mubarak Mhanna who were sentenced to death before their verdicts were commuted to life in jail, on charges of joining terrorist cell and attempting to assassinate the Bahrain Defense Force commander-in-Chief.

A statement issued by the UN experts on Tuesday stressed on ensuring that the four men are retried in accordance with international law and standards. They further urged the King of Bahrain to pardon all other death sentences and ensure that all these and other pending capital punishment cases are retried in full respect of fair trial and due process guarantees in compliance with the treaty obligations the country has undertaken under the ICCPR and CAT.

Prior to their conviction, it is understood that the men were forcibly disappeared for several months, and subjected to torture and ill-treatment to obtain confessions which were then used against them in court.
