SIU Refers 13 Policemen to Trial over 2015 Jaw Prison Events

Bahrain Mirror: The Special Investigation Unit (SIU) in Bahrain said that it had referred 13 policemen for trial over the Jaw Central Prison events that took place in March 2015.

In a press statement, SIU Acting Chief Khaled Al-Hazaa said that during the last third of last year, the Unit received 31 complaints, including allegations of torture and ill-treatment practiced by General Security Force personnel, adding that the Unit has commenced its investigations into all the complaints.

As for the statistics of the Unit's operations during the said period, the SIU listened to the statements of 59 complainants and 65 witnesses, while 53 of the accused General Security Force personnel were questioned, 4 of the complainants were referred to the Unit's forensic doctor and 2 other were referred to the Unit's psychiatrist.

"The investigation has been concluded into the allegation that a group of inmates at the Reform and Rehabilitation Department were beaten by some police officers, during and due to the security forces' attempt to take control of a large number of inmates held at the said department, who caused chaos and riots inside the Reform and Rehabilitation Center and damages to the compound, occupied it, set fires in parts of it, assaulted policemen, resisted them and attempted to murder one of them. 13 defendants from the General Security Forces were referred to the competent criminal court and are to be punished for the offense of assaulting the bodily integrity of others under articles 75/4, 107/1, 339/1-2 of the Penal Code," he further stated.
