Social Insurance Authority: Retirement Cost of “Shura and Parliament” Members Amounts to over 9m Dinars Since 2009

Bahrain Mirror: The General Authority for Social Insurance in Bahrain has revealed that the total retirement cost of the members of the Shura and House of Representatives during the past eight years (2009-2016) amounted to BD 9 million.
The authority noted that the cost of retirement members of the House of Representatives during said years amounted to 5,960 million dinars, while the cost of retirement members of the Shura Council amounted to 3,132 million dinars.

In its response to a parliamentary question regarding the retirement of members of the House of Representatives and the Shura Council from year 2006 until 2016, the Social Insurance General Authority provided a table showing all details of the retirement of members of the Shura and House of Representatives each year separately.

The table indicated an increase in the cost of retirement in recent years. While the cost of retirement members of the House of Representatives amounted to 136,000 dinars in 2009, the cost increased in 2014 to 917,000, reaching up to 1,205 million dinars in 2015.

While the cost of retirement members of the House of Representatives amounted to 136,000 dinars in 2009, the retirement cost of members of the Shura Council in the same year did not exceed 67,000 dinars, but almost doubled in the following year, amounting to 190,000 dinars in 2010.

In 2011, the pension costs of the members of the two chambers increased significantly. After amounting to 327,000 dinars in 2010, the cost of retirement of MPs increased to 669,000 dinars in 2011. Also, the cost of retirement members of the Shura Council increased to 411,000 dinars in 2011, after amounting to 190,000 dinars only in 2010.

The increase in the cost of pensions of both councils continued until it reached 519,000 dinars in 2016 for members of the Shura Council and 1,226 million dinars for members of the House of Representatives.
