BFHR: Ayatollah Qassim under House Arrest since Over 70 Days

Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain Forum for Human Rights (BFHR) said that the security authorities are still placing Ayatollah Sheikh Isa Qassim under house arrest in Diraz. This security harassment has been going on for more than 70 days.

BFHR added in a statement on Saturday (August 5, 2017) that "The continued tight security measures near Ayatollah Qassim's house have hindered his private doctors from following-up his medical condition and harassed his family members who wish to visit him through holding them for long periods and subjecting them to strict measures". "In addition, several violations of freedom of movement were recorded in Diraz, and a number of citizens are still being prosecuted over their participation in the peaceful assembly in Diraz that the authorities forcibly dispersed it, arresting hundreds of citizens and putting others to trials," the BFHR added.

Bahrain Forum for Human Rights concluded saying that "These measures imposed by the security authorities on the residents of Diraz have coincided with provocative media coverage and the authorities' denial of the information reported about various violations, including the disruption of performing the largest Friday prayer for Shia in Bahrain," stressing that Bahrain is witnessing a significant deterioration in the ideological and religious security and that fundamental rights and freedoms have been severely violated within a security context.
