Court Commutes Sentences of 11 Defendants, Upholds Verdict against Others over Attempted Murder of Officer & Policeman

Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain's Supreme Court of Appeals upheld a first-instance verdict sentencing 5 suspects to 15 years in prison and commuted the sentence of others to 10 years in prison over attempting to kill an officer and policeman in Diraz.

The High Criminal Court had sentenced 16 defendants to 15 years in prison.

According to the Public Prosecution, on September 7, 2013, the suspects committed acts of violence and vandalism in Diraz, thus, peace keeping forces headed to deal with the sabotagers. As soon as the forces arrived, the suspects attacked them using shotguns, locally made Molotov, rocks and metal rods. Two members of the forces were injured and were transferred to the hospital for treatment. As a result, the Criminal Investigation Directorate carried out serious investigations and reached the suspects.

The prosecution claims that it relied on hearsay evidence, including the testimonies of the attesting witnesses and suspects as well as the technical and medical reports.
