Authorities Revoke Nationality of Sheikh Abdullah Al-Daqaq along with Two Others

Bahrain Mirror: A Bahraini court stripped the citizenship of prominent cleric Sheikh Abdullah Al-Daqaq along with two others after regime courts issued sentences reaching 15 years in prison against them. It is to mention that Al-Daqaq is the director of a scientific Hawza in Iranian City of Qom.

Bahrain's fourth high criminal court sentenced on Thursday (March 30, 2017) detainee Shaker Hani to 15 years in prison and two others; Abdulamir Al-Aradi and Sheikh Abdullah Daqaq, to 10 years, also revoking all the defendants' Bahraini nationalities. The court fined the first defendant 100,000 BD in addition to the verdict issued against him.

The court said that it issued these verdicts against the three citizens because they "joined a terrorist group and they were aiming at disrupting public peace in the country through assembling, burning tires, putting hoax bombs and leaving the country in an illegal way."

International human rights organization like Human Rights Watch consider that the Bahraini authorities use jurisdiction and revocation of nationality as a means to punish dissidents in the country. "Bahraini courts - civilian as well as military - have been part of the machinery of repression that makes a mockery of fair trial standards when it comes to political dissent," said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch.
