Al-Wefaq Describes Death Penalties and Imprisonment of Sheikh Hassan Isa as Acts of Reprisal

2017-03-31 - 2:27 am

Bahrain Mirror: The largest opposition party in Bahrain Al-Wefaq condemned what it described as retaliatory  death  and lengthy prison sentences issued by Bahraini courts on Wednesday (March 29 2017) against a number of citizens, including the former MP Sheikh Hassan Isa.

Al-Wefaq  stressed  that Isa is one of the prominent political and societal leaders locally in Bahrain and on the regional level and one of the well-known figures known for their peaceful approach as a strategic option in the pro-democracy movement.

Al-Wefaq also denounced the death penalties and said that they were based on confessions extracted under torture and duress and considered that the trial of the former MP constitutes an act of reprisal against his political history and societal role, as Sheikh Isa had garnered over 93% of the votes in the 2011 parliamentary elections, as well as his demands for establishing democracy, social justice and respect for human rights.

The Al-Wefaq deputy secretary-general Sheikh Hassan Al-Daihi highlighted that these sentences reflect how deep and widespread the political crisis in Bahrain has become, noting that these verdicts issued daily in the most heinous forms of false justice failed to stop the peaceful popular movement, as protests and rallies continued to take place on a daily basis across Bahrain.

Al-Daihi further stated that all these cases and issues are wide open now for discussion, "from the cases of naturalization, sectarian discrimination, sectarian war waged on the main component of the Bahraini population and indigenous people to the corruption in state corpses and the regime's monopoly over power, and the list goes on."
