Appeals Court Upholds 5-Year Jail Term against Defendant Accused of Assembly in Juffair

Bahrain Mirror: The Supreme Court of Appeals ignored the rejection of a dissident for not attending the hearing. The dissident is sentenced to 5 years in prison over case of assembly and riot in Juffair.

The Public Prosecution said that on August 2, 2014 the suspect, along with other unknowns, deliberately set fire, endangering people's life and money for a terrorist aim, took part, along with other unknowns, in an assembly of more than 5 persons in a public place aiming at disrupting public peace and used violence to achieve the aim they gathered for and deliberately endangered public transportations.

The authorities claim that the suspect, along with others, gathered at 5 PM on August 2, 2014 in Juffair, blocked the street parallel to the Chinese Embassy with rocks, put two trash cans and two tires on the street, disrupted traffic, poured fuel and set fire to them. When the police arrived, the suspect and the other unknowns fled away. Only 8 to 10 people returned, however, the police chased them and could caught the suspect.
