BDF, Parliament Discuss Constitutional Amendment Granting Military Judiciary Broader Authority

2017-02-07 - 6:36 am

Bahrain Mirror: Council of Representatives Speaker Ahmad Al-Mulla said Monday (February 6, 2017) that the constitutional approach suggested by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa will be followed by an amendment on the military penal code. This came after the Commander in Chief of Bahrain Defense Forces (BDF), Khalifa bin Ahmad Al Khalifa, visited the Parliament.

Al-Mulla commended the discussion efforts of the parliamentary Legislative and Legal Affairs Committee's members on amending item B of Article 105 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Bahrain, which stipulates that the power of military courts is confined to military crimes involving staff of the BDF, National Guard and Public Security, and that its power shall not extend to others, but only when the martial law is declared.

The constitutional amendment grands broader authorities to the military judiciary, as it would be allowed to directly launch investigations in lawsuits, and try civilians in military courts.
