Fishermen: Gov’t Approach to Impose Total Ban on Shrimping Puts 379 Boats at Stake

Bahrain Mirror: A group of Bahraini fishermen said that the official approach to impose a total ban on shrimping gradually, puts 379 boats at stake.

The fishermen confirmed in a report published by local newspaper al-Wasat, that "the decisions issued in order to organize and protect the maritime wealth were a lot, and varied. All of which did not serve the maritime wealth in a way that everyone seeks, whether fishermen, sailors, or a governmental apparatus."

On this level, they clarified that the "announced and implemented decisions are not preserved when they become effective, including the decision to ban shrimping." They added that everyone knows that shrimps are found in huge numbers in the markets, and there is no clear accountability.

Moreover, they added that boats that belong to fishermen, whether licensed to fish for shrimps or fish, sail daily despite the ban, without anything to stop them. Therefore, the total ban decision will not make any difference if the sea is not preserved and monitored first, they noted.
