Washington: We Reject Charges Against Nabeel Rajab, Demand his Release

Bahrain Mirror: The US State Department said it rejects all charges against prominent rights activist Nabeel Rajab, confirming that it is following his case very closely, is demanding his release.

In a press conference at the State Department (in Friday October 28, 2016), Department spokesperson Mark Toner said, "We have repeatedly expressed our concern that he is facing trial for a series of tweets that he published last year. We - as we've stated before, we believe that no one should be prosecuted or imprisoned for engaging in peaceful expression and political activity." 

"We strongly urge the government of Bahrain, as we have in the past, to abide by its international obligations to respect and protect freedom of expression. And we reject these charges against Rajab," he went on to say. He further confirmed that a delegation from the US Embassy will be present in trial on the day of ruling against Rajab on October 31, 2016.

At the press conference, a journalist asked Mr. Toner about a Bahraini women and her child, who has a US citizenship, who were banned to leave Bahrain.

Toner denied having knowledge of this case, and promised to look into it.
