Bahraini Authorities Threaten to Ban Prayer if Considered “illegal Assembly”

2016-06-18 - 10:05 p

Bahrain Mirror: The Bahraini authorities warned on Friday (June 17, 2016) of banning prayer at one of the Shiite mosques in the Bahraini capital Manama, deeming it a form of illegal assembly.

The Capital Governor Hisham bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa stated that following the news circulated on social media about a central congressional prayer to be held at the Sadiq Mosque on Saturday, the competent parties were contacted, and it was confirmed that no such call (for prayer) was made.

The governor further stressed that any form of unlawful gathering shall be prevented.

Bahraini clerics had refrained from performing Friday prayers at the mosques yesterday, due to the security situation and the widespread heavy crackdown launched by the authorities against Shiite clerics, as more than 8 clerics were summoned for interrogation and the Imam of the largest Shiite mosque, Sheikh Mohammad Sanqour, was banned from leading prayers.
