Bahrain Mirror: Mr. Juan Mendez, the Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, expressed his disappointment over not having his multiple requests to visit Bahrain accepted during his term.
In an address he delivered on Tuesday, March 8, 2016, during the 31st session of the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva, Mendez said: "This is my sixth and last participation in the UN human rights council as a special rapporteur on torture. I am sorry that my repeated requests to visit Bahrain and Thailand were not accepted due to delays by the governments."
Mendez requested to visit Bahrain in 2011. His visit was delayed in May 2013 indefinitely; this is considered to be the second delay following a previous delay in February 2012.
