Sheikh Mohammad Khojasteh Exiled to Lebanese Capital Beirut

2016-02-23 - 2:00 am

Bahrain Mirror (Exclusive): Bahraini authorities on Sunday (February 21, 2016) expelled prominent Shiite cleric Sheikh Mohammad Khojasteh from the country, a move which comes part of a campaign targeting the followers of the Shiite sect, which led the popular protests aiming to put an end to the ruling Al Khalifa family's monopoly over power.

The head of the religious freedoms department at the Bahraini Observatory for Human Rights, Sheikh Maitham Al-Salman, affirmed on his personal Twitter account that the authorities have exiled Khojasteh to the Lebanese capital Beirut.

A Bahraini court had previously issued a verdict stripping Sheikh Khojasteh of his Bahraini citizenship and expelling him outside the kingdom over his participation in the movement calling for a democratic regime that would put an end to the ruling family's control over power.
