Al-Wefaq: Raising Gasoline Prices Exposes Floundering Gov't Policies

2016-01-13 - 2:27 am

Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain's main opposition group, Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, rejected what it described as "the immense flounder caused by the blundered and improvised policies which failed to deal with the accumulating economic crises, and by the fact that [the government] at the end of the day resorted to burdening the destitute citizens by making them pay."

Al-Wefaq stressed that raising gasoline prices by 60% in this pressuring economic situation after lifting subsidies on meat as well as working on lifting subsidies on electricity and water reveals the grave danger that the Bahraini citizens are facing and reflects how floundering and absurd  the economic policies of the government are.

"These tough crises call for the participation of all factions in decision-making, governing the country and managing the resources so that the country won't face more dangerous issues, as no one would be able to solve the difficult circumstances the country is going through", Al-Wefaq added.

It further stressed that the priorities of spending must be in accordance with a consensual national plan in order to put things straight instead of floundering, individualism and the lack of transparency which led us to this situation.

Al-Wefaq pointed out the fake promises made by the government before lifting subsidies, as it vowed to redirect subsidies and grant them to those who are deserving; yet it turned out later that it broke its promises and turned its back to the destitute citizens and went on to lift subsidies on gasoline and other services and commodities.

Al-Wefaq concluded that salvation from all accumulated problems the country and citizens are suffering from comes only with a comprehensive solution based on participation, transparency and putting the citizens first rather than considering them the weakest link, then burdening them with the government's faults by lifting subsidies, restricting their salaries and even worsening their situation.
