Bahrain to Hire Canadian Company to Block Opposition Websites with Cost over 1 Million USD

2016-01-10 - 1:10 am

Bahrain Mirror: A Canadian company proposed an offer of USD 1.17 million to Bahrain's Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) in order to provide technical solutions for blocking websites, during tenders and auctions government meeting held on Thursday (January 7, 2015).

According to the data of the council responsible for monitoring public procurement and government contracts in Bahrain, the tender was limited and restricted only to the Canadian company Netsweeper Inc.

Thus, the Canadian company automatically wins the bid, due to the lack of other competing companies, after finishing the tender technical evaluation procedures.

Since 2011, the Telecommunication regulatory Authority has blocked dozens of opposition websites or websites that support the popular uprising which erupted in February 2011 in an attempt to continue the media blackout on daily violations committed by the Bahraini authorities against citizens.
