Bahrain Mirror: Bahrain witnessed on Monday (September 14, 2015) a number of protests demanding the release of the Secretary-General of Al-Wefaq National Islamic Society, Sheikh Ali Salman, who is serving a 4-year jail term over his opposition to the Bahraini authorities.

A night before the appeals court looks into the verdict against Al-Wefaq Secretary-General, protestors took to the streets and held photos of Sheikh Ali Salman, demanding his immediate release.

Demonstrations condemning the ongoing arrest of Sheikh Salman were staged in more than 45 villages across Bahrain, including the capital, Manama.

The opposition parties said that the political activism is being subjected to wide targeting campaign, restrictions and unprecedented security pursuits. It is the first time that five current and former secretary-generals of political societies are behind bars.

In a statement, they added: "Baseless charges were brought against Sheikh Ali Salman and he was prosecuted in a court described by international organizations as one that lacks the simplest standards of justice. He was also imprisoned."
