Power Subsidies Lifted: 8000 Power Units for Each House

2015-08-07 - 10:07 p

Bahrain Mirror: The chairman of the Parliamentary committee for reviewing the policy of redirecting subsidies and developing governmental revenues, Sheikh Majed Al-Majed, said that the Bahraini Minister of Energy, AbdulHussain Mirza, proposed that the committee adopts a government approach to allocate 8000 power units to each house owner, including governmental subsidies.

Al-Majed explained that even if the husband has two houses, i.e. if he has two wives and two separate houses, he is will be given the same number of power units, pointing out that the small technical committee formed to redirect subsidies is discussing these points with the Minister of Energy and may demand reducing the cost currently imposed on citizens.

This approach; however, contradicts with previous statements that the subsidies on electricity will not include citizens and will only affect expats and economic and industrial sectors in the country, which will increase the citizens' cost of living.

The country has been suffering from a severe political crisis since the eruption of widespread protests in February 2011 and from a financial crisis that deteriorated with the decline of oil prices in global markets. This measure comes as part of a series of measures to reduce government spending such as lifting the subsidies on meats and other measures as well.

The lifting of meat subsidies is expected to take place starting next September, after postponing the decision for one full month based on an order by the Prime Minister Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa.
