Bahrain Mirror: The member of Bahrain's Special Investigation Unit (SIU) said that the unit received last month 36 complaints ranging between torture claims as well as ill-treatment and use of excessive force by police officers against prisoners and that the unit has started taking measures in this regard.
Haza' added that the unit affiliated to the Public Prosecution had questioned 15 accused and 14 suspects from the security forces in separate cases. It also heard the testimonies of 35 witnesses and exposed two of the plaintiffs to the forensics to identify their injuries, if found, and determine how and when they occurred.
He further stated that the SIU also received a copy of the case of the events occurred in Jaw Prison on March 10, 2015 in the reform and rehabilitation department, that was referred by the Public Prosecution to a specialized court, as the unit had already asked the prosecution for copies of the documents of the case being investigated. The unit is currently taking the investigation measures in this regard.
As for the cases referred to the courts, the SIU had completed its investigations into three separate cases and concluded with referring seven police officers to trial in courts specialized in the charges of violations of bodily integrity and requested that they'd be punished pursuant to the articles 4/75, 1/107, 2/1/339, and 340 of the penal code. The fourth and fifth lower criminal courts will look into these cases on September 6 and 29, 2015.
